San Francisco Peninsula
Native Ground connects corporate partners with the trail systems, land managers, and communities of the San Francisco Peninsula — building a durable model for environmental stewardship.
Partner With Us Our MissionWho We Are
Native Ground was founded on a simple belief: the trails that sustain our communities deserve the sustained investment of the corporations and institutions that benefit from them.
We build structured partnerships between corporate sponsors and regional land managers — translating environmental commitment into measurable, on-the-ground impact across the San Francisco Peninsula.
Our model is designed to be legible to sustainability teams, satisfying to employees, and durable over time. We provide the infrastructure, the relationships, and the accountability that makes corporate environmental engagement work.
How We Work
Photo Reports & GPS Condition Logging
Volunteers and staff submit geo-tagged condition reports through TrailWatch, our purpose-built PWA — capturing hazards, drainage failures, erosion, fallen trees, and maintenance needs tied to precise GPS coordinates and trail segment. Reports are timestamped, attributed, and immediately visible to partner land managers.
Cluster Detection
When five or more independent reports land within 15 feet of each other within a 24-hour window, TrailWatch automatically flags the cluster as a priority incident — surfacing the issues most likely to warrant crew response without requiring manual triage.
4D Trail Scanning
On eligible routes, we conduct LiDAR-assisted spatial scans of trail corridors, producing 4D point-cloud maps of trail geometry, slope, drainage, and surface conditions. This data — combined with photo reports and GPS logs — gives land managers a survey-grade baseline that most agencies have never had access to at this scale. Deployment depends on terrain, route length, and access conditions.
The Data Packet
Each reporting cycle produces a structured data packet delivered directly to land management partners: condition photos, GPS-anchored reports, cluster flags, and available LiDAR scans — in a format designed for agency GIS systems and maintenance planning workflows.
The Field App
TrailWatch is our purpose-built field app for reporting trail conditions. Volunteers and stewardship crews use it to capture hazards, erosion, drainage failures, and downed trees — each report geo-tagged to precise GPS coordinates and delivered straight to the land managers responsible for that trail.
It runs in any phone browser and works offline on the trail, syncing the moment you're back in range — so a dead zone never costs you a report. There's no app-store download and no setup beyond a name and email: open it, capture, and you're done.
